Céline Dion and René Angélil: a story of love and Music
René Angélil made his entrance quite early into Céline Dion's life. From the first moments, he was there for her, mortgaging his house so that she could launch her career, and did everything he could to help her become a big international star. Their close professional collaboration gave rise to very strong romantic feelings between the star and her agent. But one day, the couple learned that René Angélil had throat cancer. Faced with this twist of fate, Céline Dion was of great support to her husband, notably accompanying him in his fight against illness. She told in 2016 Paris Match : “Toward the end, we were watching TV shows and laughing a lot. He loved it when I came over for my morning coffee with him.”
Why Céline Dion was unable to witness René Angélil's last moments
At the end of 2013, René Angélil's throat cancer returned and worsened. On January 14, 2016, the musician and composer died after a long fight against illness. Due to René Angélil's state of health, the couple lived in separate rooms. The interpreter of My Heart Will Go On had thus established a routine with her husband, going to tuck him in and kiss him every evening. The night René Angélil breathed his last, Céline Dion came home late because of her performance. Also, she exceptionally decided not to wake her husband and to be present when he woke up. Unfortunately, on January 14, in the early morning, René had already died… After this terrible mourning, the international star continued to present René Angélil as the man of her life. During a show in 2016, Celine Dion said: “Throughout my life, I only had eyes for my husband, who sat here, night after night.”
