One of the major issues in the music sector is that of the ecological footprint of vinyl, produced from 43% PVC, the third most used plastic material in the world and one of the most toxic substances for our planet. But solutions are emerging, pushed by labels, but also artist initiatives, like Coldplay.

After setting an example with its ecological tour, Chris Martin’s group has announced that the vinyl copies of its new album, Moon Musiccoming in October, will be made from 100% recycled bottles.

Pioneer group

Each copy of the vinyl album will contain nine recycled PET plastic bottles from post-consumer waste, reports the NME. This should avoid the manufacture of more than 25 tonnes of virgin plastic and reduce CO2 emissions by 85% compared to traditional 140 gram vinyl.

But that’s not all. The CD editions of the disc will be the first in the world to be created on EcoCD, i.e. from 90% recycled polycarbonate, sourced from post-consumer waste.

And because ecology does not rhyme with boredom, the album produced by Max Martin (Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Katy Perry) will be available in a limited number of editions, signed by hand, with a special edition which will be offered a replica of Chris Martin’s original notebook. Throughout these 28 pages with lyrics and illustrations, fans will be able to discover a little more about the creative process of their idol… and consume without (too much) guilt!
