An intimate look at Type O Negative’s enigmatic frontman

During a recent interview with Drew Stone of The New York Hardcore Chronicles Live, Sal Abruscato, Type O Negative’s original drummer, shared poignant memories of the band’s late frontman Peter Steele, who passed away in April 2010. Abruscato’s reflections provide insight into Steele’s character and the challenges he faced during his career.

Abruscato described Steele as a multifaceted individual, emphasizing his kindness and vulnerability. Despite Steele’s generous nature, Abruscato revealed the dark side of his fame, shedding light on how people took advantage of him, including members of his own band. Abruscato recalls a conversation with Steele shortly before his death, during which Steele confided to him about his financial difficulties and his feelings of isolation. Steele’s journey was marked by ups and downs, with Abruscato noting that despite his intelligence and artistic vision, Steele’s life ended tragically due to a combination of factors, including substance abuse and financial exploitation.

Steele’s legacy extends beyond his time with Type O Negative. Born Petrus T. Ratajczyk in Brooklyn, New York, Steele became a legendary figure in the music industry thanks to his commanding presence and signature deep voice. Before forming Type O Negative, Steele played with bands such as Fallout and Carnivore, demonstrating his talent and passion for music.

Abruscato’s departure from Type O Negative in 1993 marked the end of an era, with Johnny Kelly replacing him. However, Steele’s untimely death in 2010 led to the official disbandment of Type O Negative, with members feeling that the group could not continue without Steele’s leadership and songwriting prowess.
