Who says new number Top chef, says new tests. This Wednesday, April 17, the candidates from the orange brigade and the gray brigade faced each other for a special broadcast since the black box entered the game earlier than in previous years. It appeared for the first time during season 3 of the competition in 2012 and was definitively called that from season 6 of the M6 show in 2015. This event opposes each year since then, two teams of candidates with their chefs who must taste a dish while immersed in total darkness. They must seek to reproduce this dish as faithfully as possible using touch, smell and taste. It is fifteen minutes before the end of the test that the candidates finally see the plate in the light to refine the last details before being evaluated.

The emotion is palpable among the oranges

For the first time, the black box left the sets of Top chef to settle in the arenas of the Château de Chantilly. And this Wednesday, April 17, it was Shirley from the orange brigade and Marie from the gray brigade who found themselves face to face after not having shone respectively on the meringue test and on the soufflé omelette test for which Gilles Goujon, MOF and 3-star chef, as well as Tom Meyer, the youngest MOF, were chosen as judges. The two chefs had to reproduce a plate, containing puffed apples, a fine veal stuffing and its glaze, imagined by Guy Krenzer, two-time Meilleur Ouvrier de (MOF).

While everyone tried to do their best to try and reproduce the dish discovered blindly, it was Shirley who failed to save her place. What made the difference? Guy Krenzer said: “In fact, all three techniques had a little something extra each time [pour la brigade grise]”. The emotion was palpable among the oranges, as evidenced by the speech of Dominique Crenn, sad to see the brilliant candidate leave. “I’m sorry… She really is a great cook. A person with a lot of humility. You have a great future ahead of you and really congratulations for who you are”, said the fiancée of American actress Maria Bello.

“It’s not a failure”

Stéphanie Le Quellec then added: “Totally! I feel responsible, we were a team, we were behind Shirley, she’s the first orange to leave the team and frankly it’s much too early. Shirley, she’s a wonderful person, ( …) I am convinced that we will hear about you very quickly”. “I’m disappointed to leave now and I think it was too early… Doing the competition taught me a lot of things and it changed a lot of things in me. It’s not a failure, already To be here is incredible so for me it’s just started.”concluded Shirley before leaving to the applause of her comrades.
