French film “Under the Seine” records incredible audience on Netflix

Much to the displeasure of some, the film Under the Seine is one of the greatest hits of this summer 2024 on the Netflix platform. The subtle allusion to the quality of the water of the river cutting through the capital or the coincidence of the Paris Olympic Games has – it seems – borne fruit!

The law of the strongest

But it seems that in fact the success is much more important than that. Indeed, according to the site The French Filmthe blockbuster aquatic by Xavier Gens (with Bérénice Bejo and Nassim Lyes) is now one of the biggest hits on Netflix for a foreign film, with more than 100 million views worldwide. Incidentally, it also won the gold medal for the French feature film with the most views.

In the overall ranking, the film certainly does not reach the first place of non-English language films on the black and red platform. It is in fact overtaken by Troll, a Norwegian film, directed by Roar Uthaug, with a huge monster that is really very ugly. Of course, giant creatures and the apocalypse always work. Even Apple gave in and bought Godzilla!

An eco-friendly dud, yes, but also a blockbuster.

But the performance is there and is far from being insignificant for a film unveiled last June, which gives a very good score acquired in just over two monthsHowever, its success is rather contested by critics and the entire scientific body who have raised the impossibility for certain maritime creatures to live and reproduce in the Seine.

But nothing worked (it’s fiction after all)! Faced with such results, the prospect of a sequel is obviously on the negotiating table.the producers not being insensitive to a possible cinematographic vein. Also, the director does not exclude going to visit other river cities around the world to throw a few sharks there and see their chances of survival in their waters!

On the side of Sous la Seine, let’s remember that the story develops the theme of the ugly shark from Jaws! It takes place in the summer of 2024, Paris hosts the triathlon world championships for the first time, one of which takes place in the Seine (any resemblance to any sporting event would be coincidental, as would the presence of the Mayor of Paris…). Sophia, a brilliant scientist (Bérénice Bejo) is alerted by an environmental activist to the incongruous presence of a creature. She will have to team up with Adil from the river police (Nassim Lyes) to resolve the situation…
