The events took place on the night of January 18 to 19. Around midnight, urban violence broke out in the Saugeraies district of Mâcon (Saône-et-Loire).”against a backdrop of drug trafficking“, according to the prefect of Saône-et-Loire Yves Séguy.
Three public buildings were damaged. Moreover, seven “light vehicles” were set on fire, as well as an excavator and ten trash cans. Three police vehicles were also damaged.
As a result, the prefect issued several orders from January 18 to 21. They prohibit the possession and transport of weapons “all categories combined“and ammunition and objects”which could constitute a weapon“. The ban is effective in all of the municipalities of Mâcon, Sancé and Charnay-lès-Mâcon.

By 5 a.m. the situation returned to normal. The prefect, however, asked “the reinforcement of mobile security forces for the coming night“. At 11 a.m., he went there in the company of Jean-Patrick Courtois, the mayor of the city.

The day after this night of violence, several residents met by France 3 Bourgogne expressed their dismay. Some witnessed mortar fire committed by young individuals. “There are burned containers along the road, carts, shopping carts everywhere…“, deplores a local resident. “Something has to be done, for me it's not normal.“
“It was farting non-stop, non-stop, non-stop“, says another resident. “There were no adults there, only kids, no more than 16 years old! Why did they burn all that, why? This is unacceptable, it shouldn't exist!“
