Hello everyone!
After a rather brief update on the series we will see the upcoming film projects in our favorite distant galaxy! We can also understand the scarcity of live action TV projects as a desire to gradually devote oneself to the big screen again (and to face increasingly disappointing audience results).
On the cinema side, several projects and project ideas come together to form a whole that is not always easy to understand (as we already said last year!). Let’s take stock together!
DISCLAIMER: Some rumors discussed in this article are clearly possible (albeit minor) spoilers!
The Mandalorian And Grogu : Where is the film? What about the mandoverse in cinema?
This is the most advanced project of all! In fact, last October we mentioned the fact that filming would be finished. Additionally, during D23 last summer, an exclusive trailer was shown. On the general public side, apart from a probable release date scheduled for 05/22/2026, we have no other official information.
As for rumors, however, there are quite a few things to say. In particular possible indiscretions on the character of Sigourney Weaver (whose participation in the film is not a rumor since the actress has confirmed it). Indeed, according to Jeff Sneider and Bespin Bulletin, his character only appears in a few scenes of the film, is a colonel of the New Republic and his name is a direct reference to Aliensnamely, Bishop. Ditto for that of Jeremy Allen-White.
Other rumors have emerged recently, notably about the possible presence of a villain in the film (he could even be the main antagonist). This would be Embo, a Kyuzo bounty hunter during the Clone Wars, discovered in the animated series The Clone Wars.
On the possible scenario side and to make the link between these different rumors, it would be possible according to certain sources that the story of the film is that of the recruitment of our duo to rescue a Rotta the Hutt kidnapped and pursued by Embo who would seek to kill him. Which may suggest, according to the Bespin Bulletin article evoking this possibility, a similar scenario in The Clone Wars (the kidnapping of Rotta baby).
Take these lines as simple rumors with a grain of salt. On these various points, no official announcement has been made.
Furthermore, remember that Dave Filoni must also direct a film in this famous mandoverse (= the universe and timeline shared by all of Favreau and Filoni's live series). However, this one still seems quite far away, with the man in the hat busy giving Favreau a hand to The Mandalorian And Grogu as well as writing season 2 ofAhsoka ! This Filoni film is presented as a “crossover” of the mandoverse. We can therefore already imagine a sort of Avengers Star Wars style with The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett et Skeleton Crew !
Rey Skywalker : The future of the saga in cinema?
A recent article from The Hollywood Reporter recently explained the importance of Daisy Ridley's character to the future of the franchise on the big screens in the minds of Disney/Lucasfilm executives. I strongly invite you to read the SWU article which summarizes the THR article here!
Indeed, several projects could see the light of day with its presence (central or annex).
The first project (and not the least) is often called on the internet The New Jedi Order although no official title is given! Indeed, the latest news, the film led by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy lost its screenwriter (Stephen Knight) and was actively looking for a replacement. Although other “big” names participated in the writing before leaving too (like Damon Lindelof), it is important to add that these movements of creatives within a project are commonplace in the way of functioning in Hollywood lately, especially in big productions. Note that one of the most popular projects of the Disney era, Rogue Onehas also experienced his share of musical chairs! filming should even begin in 2025 but later than planned in the year. Release in 2027?
Rey could also be at the center of to Kinberg's trilogy (which is actually quite strange!) announced by a reliable source, here Variety. The article specifies that this trilogy would take place after the postlogy with new main characters. The details of the story are obviously not known at this time but it seems that several sources disagree as to whether or not it is a continuation of the Skywalker saga or a new trilogy, detached from the stay.
-The question therefore arises as to whether the New Jedi Order project and the Kinberg trilogy are simply more than one? But it seems, again according to Variety, that no.
She should also appear but probably older in the film that Shawn Levy is preparing with Jonathan Tropper in the screenplay (rumor by Jeff Sneider, quite reliable).
Despite the overwhelming presence of rumors here, one thing that seems certain is the importance of Rey for the future of the saga in cinema!
James Mangold's project: a leap into the Jedi's past!
A recent rumor suggested that this film could be called Jedi Prime (it has time to change names 15 times before landing on our screens!). This film by James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Clock of Destiny) was announced at the Star Wars Celebration in April 2023 in London, the title then mentioned was Star Wars : Dawn Of The Jedi (reminiscent of comics and an excellent EU Legends novel!).
The director recently spoke on the subject in particular on the fact that he wishes to tell a story very distant in time from the main saga to have more creative freedom without being “hindered” by existing scenarios/events/characters and to be taken into account in the development of new stories for the sake of the overall coherence of the universe.
This kind of declaration can make us hope for a very original proposal!
On the more consistent announcement side, we have known since the beginning of April that Beau Willimon (House Of Cards) joins Mangold to write the script.
And the rest?
The article from The Hollywood Reporter that I invite you to read above gave us a list of what they think are the Star Wars projects currently in work at Lucasfilm (at very varying degrees of production):
- Taika Waititi's project.
- The series turned movie “Lando” by the Glover brothers.
- Rogue Squadron (yes there it is again, still with Patty Jenkins?).
We have little information and just as few rumors about these latest projects.
Conclusion
As you will have noticed if you have reached the end of this article, Lucasfilm and Disney do not intend to leave our cinemas orphaned by Star Wars films for long. The live action series for Disney+ will surely gradually leave room for the upcoming arrival of feature films with the first of them (at least chronologically): The Mandalorian And Grogu!
Despite the fact that this list of projects seems long and a bit confusing, let's not forget that it is completely normal for a studio with a license as powerful as Star Wars to be in intense reflection on future films. It is very likely that in the list of what we have just mentioned today, one or more projects will not see cinemas and others will perhaps emerge too!
To stay informed of these developments: stay tuned to SWU!
