Major upgrade for the Colisée Desjardins

Published on January 13, 2025

Major work will be carried out at the Colisée Desjardins in the summer of 2025. A mandate was granted in public session to convert the heating system to use renewable energies and thus reduce the production of greenhouse gases. The refrigerated slab will be replaced and new strips and flexible bay windows will be installed. The players’ entrance will be redesigned to provide better accessibility.

“Our government is proud to invest an amount of $7.4 million to install new boards and flexible bay windows in the ten arenas that had not yet acquired them and where Hockey League teams play junior Maritimes Quebec. This initiative directly responds to one of the recommendations of the Hockey Development Committee report, which aims to promote safer environments by reducing the impact during contact and thus reducing the risk of concussion. I am happy to know that the Colisée Desjardins will soon become a safer place for our players! », Underlined Ms. Isabelle Charest, Minister responsible for Sport, Recreation and the Outdoors.

“I am proud of the support offered by our government for this project to reduce greenhouse gases in Victoriaville. Initiatives like this help build greener, more resilient communities. I would like to congratulate the City of Victoriaville for its leadership and commitment to Quebec’s climate and energy transition,” said Mr. Benoit Charette, Minister of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, and minister responsible for the Laurentides region.

“We are beginning the conversion of main municipal buildings to clean energy. This transition is part of our plan to reduce greenhouse gases. The mandate granted aims to replace the heating system at the Colisée Desjardins and the Agri-Sports Pavilion. Over the coming months, we will give a new mandate to decarbonize city hall, the Jean-Béliveau pavilion, the Fernand-Giguère fire station and the Hamel drinking water plant” explained the mayor of Victoriaville, Antoine Late.

“After more than 40 years of service, the Colisée Desjardins slab has reached the end of its useful life and is causing numerous service breakdowns. His replacement has become inevitable. Coliseum users will welcome the redesign of the player entrance which will make access to the building much easier with the addition of automatically opening double doors. Finally, the addition of strips and flexible bay windows will increase player safety and make it possible to comply with the standards established by the Maritimes Quebec Junior Hockey League,” added the municipal councilor and elected member of the leisure, culture and development committee. communities, Benoit Gauthier.

Work planned over the summer will aim to replace the roof’s mechanical units to allow the use of an electric heat pump system. They will be carried out at the Colisée Desjardins from May 5 until October. For the Agri-Sports pavilion, the work will take place from May 26 to July 11. These periods are intended to keep service interruptions to usual activities to a minimum.

The replacement of the strips and bay windows is made possible thanks to the financial contribution from the Fund for the Development of Sport and Physical Activity. For its part, the conversion of the building to renewable energies is financed by the Government of Quebec as part of the Plan for a Green Economy 2030 in order to accelerate the local climate transition.
