The juvenile heroes of episode 6 of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”
The last day of 2024 marked the release of the sixth episode of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”. This series follows the odyssey of a group of children lost in the galaxy, desperately seeking to find their way back. During their journey, they meet Jod Na Nawood (played by Jude Law), a cunning pirate with multiple identities, sought by bounty hunters, his former crew, the New Republic and many others. In the previous episode, he betrayed the children, took control of their droid, SM-33 (Nick Frost), and fled to steal their ship, the legendary Onyx Cinder.
A perilous escape and surprising revelations
As the episode “Zero Friends Again” begins, the children manage to escape Jod's clutches. The latter, freed, can then grab all the treasure he can carry and cheerfully continue his journey. For their part, the children spend the episode trying to retake their ship without the help of their adult companion, their relationships becoming more and more strained.
Along the way, revelations are made about the series' young heroes, particularly KB (Kyriana Kratter) and her medical condition. This forces Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), the leader of the group, to help her maintain her artificial intelligence unit, because she is too afraid to show this weakness to her friend Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong).
Nods to “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Treasure Island”
The “Skeleton Crew” series, with its focus on pirates from the “Star Wars” universe, pays homage to other Disney franchises, including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Treasure Island.” The rules of piracy play a major role in these stories, with notions like the “black spot”, the official sign that a pirate has been sentenced to death by his peers. And it's impossible not to note the influence of pirate villain Long John Silver, whose name is eerily similar to “Silvo.”
Each new episode of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” airs Tuesdays at 6 p.m. PST on Disney+.
