The DC universe was on pause at the cinema after a complicated year 2023, but the Justice League did not rest. The superhero team faces a multiversal threat in 2024 in an all-new trilogy. The first movie even surpasses Deadpool & Wolverine.
A multiversal DC trilogy
Justice League : Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One est the first part of an ambitious animated trilogy, adapted from the famous DC Comics crossover published between 1985 and 1986. The project is led by Jeff Wamester, known for his work on “Justice League: Warworld” (2023) and “Legion of Super-Heroes” (2023). The screenplay was entrusted to Jim Krieg, an experienced screenwriter having participated in projects such as “Batman: Gotham by Gaslight” (2018) and “The Death of Superman” (2018).
The film brings together an all-star voice cast with Matt Bomer as Flash/Barry Allen, previously heard in “Superman: Unbound” (2013, Jensen Ackles playing Batman/Bruce Wayne after lending his voice to Jason Todd in “Batman”). : Under the Red Hood” (2010), and Darren Criss as Superman having already played this character in “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” (2020). Production was handled by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment. The film was released on January 9, 2024 in the United States directly on VOD and DVD/Blu-ray.
The film explores the release of the Anti-Monitor, the Monitor’s evil counterpart, into the DC Multiverse. This destructive entity sets out to annihilate the different Earths that make up the multiverse. To counter this existential threat, the Monitor recruits heroes from various parallel realities, forming an unprecedented alliance of vigilantes determined to save all universes.
“An adventure full of action and heart”
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One was favorably received by critics who gave it a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. For comparison, Deadpool & Wolverine tops out at 78%. Common Sense Media describes the film as “an action-packed adventure with heart“, emphasizing its balance of dynamic scenes and emotional depth. For IGN Movies, “There is no depth, no moral darkness, no optional depth for people hungry for knowledge. Just good entertainment, clean and marginally sensible.”, highlighting the entertaining aspect despite a certain narrative complexity.
Screen Rant claims that the film “brings the DC Comics crossover to life in an animated adaptation that is emotional, thrilling and nerve-wracking”, praising its fidelity to the original material and its narrative intensity. And Inverse emphasizes that it is “a worthy adaptation that focuses on heart and character“, particularly appreciating the development of the characters. Finally, the Dynamic Duel Podcast notes that “its unconventional narrative structure ultimately pays off, as its emotional ending foreshadows a fascinating conclusion to this animated universe”, anticipating with interest the sequel to the trilogy.
