Considered by many to be the best superhero movie of all time, 'The Dark Knight' begins with an anthology sequence
Do you remember the feeling that left Avengers: Infinity War after its screening in cinemas? That Thanos snap that made half the planet disappear and left Marvel fans speechless for a year? Well, years before we had experienced something similar in the DC universe. Batman lovers who came to see the first part of Christopher Nolan's trilogy, Batman Beginsthey were left wanting more when the credits appeared. Only they had to wait three years.
In the last sequence of the feature film, after freeing Gotham from Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul, Bruce Wayne confronts Commissioner Gordon, who came to warn him of a new, much bigger threat. “What can you tell me about this guy? Armed robbery, double homicide, he likes staging, like you, and he always leaves the same letter.”says the policeman, handing Batman a Joker card.
“I'll take care of him,” Wayne assures, giving rise to the long-awaited sequel and leaving the public on tenterhooks. Everyone knew what that meant: that the confrontation between Bat-Man and his famous archenemy was to come.
Three years of waiting
The film promised to be exceptional and fans had three years to build up the hype. Fortunately, Nolan did not disappoint and was responsible for demonstrating in the first minutes that he knew very well what he was doing. Composed with the surgical precision that we know from Christopher Nolan, the scene captures attention from the first moment.
As expected, the first scene features the introduction of the Joker. Nolan used Michael Mann's cinema to create an action-packed sequence and the first thing we see is a Gotham robbery. The thieves? Five men in clown masks, two on the roof of the establishment, three in a car. As the operation progresses, they are eliminated one after another.
When all the robbers have been killed and a school bus comes to destroy the bank's facade, the last clown standing loads the bags of cash into the vehicle. Before leaving, he approaches the manager of the establishment, puts a smoke grenade in his mouth and removes his mask, revealing the face of one of the most formidable villains in cinema. “What doesn't kill you makes you different”the Joker exclaims before taking his first bow.
