The third film in the saga of the famous blue hedgehog opens in theaters this December 25
Two years later, the third installment of Sonic finally meeting Shadow (Keanu Reeves) after seeing him in the post-credits scene of Sonic 2. But it also has one special thing: Jim Carrey in two different characters, proving that he is the best at what he does and that he is the cinematographic icon that he is.
Sonic 3 It is directed by Jeff Fowler5 and places us with the Sonic team already formed by Tails and Knuckles. But the appearance of Shadow causes their lives to take a completely unexpected turn as they try to save the world from the same destruction.
“The creative challenges are exciting,” explains Fowler in an interview with SensaCine, answering the question about balancing action, humor and narrative. “We are always looking to go further, offering the audience something more exciting, with bigger visual effects. Finding that right balance between story and spectacle is what makes the whole process so rewarding.
After the success of the first two films, the team is not only looking to repeat the same formula, but to elevate it:
“We want to push the story, the ambition and the scope of the films,” adds Fowler. It is a constant search to offer something new and exciting for fans and also attract new audiences.
Shadow, Sonic's new rival that changes the rules
This third installment introduces Shadow, a character who redefines the tone and direction of the saga: “Shadow provides very exciting options,” explains the director. “His story is so emotional and unique that we knew his addition would bring something fresh. “It really takes our story in a whole new direction.”
Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic, has also shared his enthusiasm about the interaction between Sonic and Shadow: “It's a total contrast. They are both hedgehogs, but their stories have taken them down such opposite paths. Seeing how they try to influence each other, whether negatively or positively, is fascinating.”
“It has been a hilarious dance of joy and creative exaltation”: Jim Carrey returns, twice, in 'Sonic 3'
James Marsden, who plays Tom in the saga, has also told us about the evolution of his character's relationship with Sonic: “In the first movie, he was like a little alien in our backyard. Now, we see him mature into adolescence, and our relationship as parental figures strengthens. Although, of course, he keeps getting into trouble, which is part of the fun.”
Jim Carrey squared
Of course, Jim Carrey is still the one that stands out the most in the saga for his role as Robotnik, but this time he does it twice, something quite remarkable: “It's incredible to work with him,” explains Fowler.” Jim makes everything look so easy, even when he's playing both sides of a scene or creating a new Robotnik for this installment. It is a true icon. It's just amazing. In this third film, he surpasses himself by giving life to a completely new Robotnik. “His ability to make every scene unforgettable is something unique.”
