After a catastrophic centenary, Disney is smiling again in 2024

Disney rubs its hands and finds success again. After a year 2023 that looked like an industrial disaster, the company gave up its place as world box office leader for the first time since 2015. The failures ofIndiana Jones 5, The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania et Wish: Asha and the lucky star weighed heavily on the revenues of the company which had experienced a record year in 2019 with more than 13 billion in revenue across the world. As the film industry slowly recovered from the pandemic, Mickey was not there for the recovery. In 2024, the studio is doing much better and marks the best performance in the industry since Covid-19.

According to information shared by DeadlineDisney has exceeded 5 billion dollars of global box office revenue. At the time of writing, the company would have raised no less than $5.06 billion on the global stage. 2.5 billion come from North America and 3 from the rest of the world. This is the fifth time that the firm has managed to pass the 5 billion mark since 2010. Disney regains its crown as the most successful studioafter giving way to Universal in 2023.

The public loves sequels

Since taking over the reins of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger has had two obsessions. His predecessor relied heavily on Disney+ to generate revenue – by offering certain films simultaneously on the platform and in cinemas in territories that allow it – Iger wants to put cinemas back at the heart of the studio's concerns. Exit simultaneous exitsthe footage now benefits from the longest possible exploitation. Then, Bob Iger largely turned to the team's emblematic licenses, with a few exceptions.

Marvel, which only offered one film in 2024, is finding success again with Deadpool & Wolverine. The meeting of the two characters raised 1.3 billion dollars on the international scene. If the output of Joker: Folie à Deux could have put this victory into perspective, Arthur Fleck's first adventure having dethroned Deadpool 1 among the most profitable R-Rated films, Todd Phillips' second film was largely shunned by critics and the public. Wade Wilson and Logan stand out as the superhero of the year. Shawn Levy's film was a new opportunity to prove that nostalgia works, many forgotten characters from the universes X-Men et the Fantastic Four were summoned for a multiversal adventure which was not unworthy.

Among the licenses adored by the general public, Vice-versa is the one that stands out the most by being the most seen film around the world (1.6 billion). Riley's emotions resonated with the audience. Vaiana 2 is already promised to be a huge success, its launch having far exceeded the firm's expectations. The animated film should take advantage of the school holidays to continue building its legend. The film has already generated more than 700 million dollars. Finally, Disney can pride itself on having created a surprise with less expected projects, such asAlien : Romulus (351 million) and Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom (398 millions).

In 2025, the firm should scale back on direct sequels, focusing mainly on live-action remakes and new entries into its legendary universes. This will be the case with Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts at Marvel while Lilo & Stitch et Snow White will benefit from live-action exploitation. The end of the year is still likely to be difficult, with the return of the saga Avatar.
