And you hadn’t seen it like that either, don’t deny it. Pixar is worth paying attention to
There were many who asked themselves, upon seeing Up for the first time, how it was possible that Muntz, several years older than Carl, appeared to be much younger. And, really… there was a subplot that explained everything (the bird laid eggs that gave infinite youth), but At Pixar they decided that it didn’t really contribute anything, it distracted the viewer and, at the end of the day, people would forgive this small inconsistency. They were right: when talking about Up They talk about the house, the beginning, Dug and the adventure, but never about this, ultimately, very serious mistake. Advantages of being the most beloved animation studio in the world.
The house where… uh… things happened
How can you not forgive any inconsistency in a film that gives you a first scene like that? At first, Pixar thought it would be more emotional to show it as if they were Polaroid-style home movies, and Pete Docter more or less agreed: after all, I had to make the audience love the characters from the first minute because, if not, nothing that followed was going to work. And they allowed themselves, between tears and tears… to play a little with the public.
You probably know the sequence by heart, except for those moments where crying has prevented you from seeing what is happening, but there is one moment that you may have overlooked: when Newlyweds Carl and Ellie are making their house, putting in nails and sawing wood.. Indeed, two sexual allegories to give us an idea that the wedding night was not exactly spent blowing up balloons.
Up is so good that it will go down in history as one of the three titles (so far, at least) that has received an Oscar nomination for best filmafter Beauty and the beast and before Toy Story 3. And now, I leave you free to watch the scene again and cry to your heart’s content.
