The first two installments are available on Disney+ and are perfect for an afternoon of cinema at home

Nicolas Cage has done everything in cinema: thriller, drama, comedy, horror… he has even stepped into the shoes of Dracula. Among all these genres, one of his most prominent facets is that of the action hero and he brought one to life in one of the best adventure films of the last two decades: The search. We have been waiting for 17 years for them to give the green light to a third installment.

Directed by Jon Turteltaub, The search hit theaters in 2004 and, in it, Cage got into the shoes of Benjamin Gatesan archaeologist who embarks on an adventure to find the treasure that has obsessed his family for generations. Next to him, forming a team, is the clumsy and computer expert Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and the government official Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger).

The problems with ‘The Search 3’

After the second delivery, The search 3 It seemed like the next step to take. Turteltaub stated in 2008 that they were going to take some time to make a new installment. In 2013, the idea was still going, but it seemed like the script was getting complicated. The years passed and in 2018 the script seemed to be almost ready, but in January 2020 everything changed: it was announced that another writer was going to take charge of another completely new script.

In May 2020, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that not only was a third film in development, but a series was also set to premiere on Disney+. The story is the same as the first film but with a younger cast. The Search: Beyond Historystarring Lisette Alexis and Catherine Zeta-Jones, premiered in 2022 but was canceled after its first season.

The protagonists of ‘The Search’

Disney’s attempt to reshape the Cage saga didn’t work, but what about The search 3? In December 2022, Bartha stated that there was still hope for a new installment.

The actor said the following while promoting the Disney+ fiction, in which he repeated his character: “There is a script. That’s all I’ll say. There have been a few different scripts, but what has to happen for it to happen is for the stars to align.”.

However, Cage took it upon himself to end all hope in March of this year: “Here we are! See? You’re the one talking about this and it overshadows everything else. No, there is not The search 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney“he stated in Screen Rant.

We’ve been waiting almost two decades for a sequel and what we have left.
