‘The War of the Rohirrim’ has just become the worst premiere of a ‘Lord of the Rings’ film, but its creators have still achieved their goal

‘The War of the Rohirrim’, the prequel to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy directed by Peter Jackson which takes us back to Middle-earth with a story focused on the riders of Rohan.

The truth is that ‘The War of the Rohirrim‘had all the basic ingredients to be able to hit the box office, between the revival of the fantasy franchise, the fact that anime is more fashionable than ever, and that on top of that the film is directed by Kenji Kamiyama (‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex’).

The thing didn’t work out

But the combo hasn’t finished working and the anime film of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ has hit it big. Its career did not start well with international releases in the first 31 markets, which barely earned it worldwide income of 2 million dollars.

A Warner Bros. They still had to hold on to the premiere in the United States, but ‘The Rohirrim War’ It has barely raised 4.6 million nationally. Not only that, on Rotten Tomatoes it is already the film with the lowest score in the entire history of the franchise: at the time of writing this article it barely has 51% positive reviews specialized. Until now, that honor had gone to ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’, with 59% positive reviews.

So for now the Rohirrim have it rough, because the first anime of the franchise had an estimated budget of 30 million dollars. Which in reality are practically crumbs if we compare them with American animated films… But it seems that they are going to have a hard time recovering their investment.

War of the Rohirrim 2

At least at Warner they make sure to retain the rights to ‘The Lord of the Rings’, which was the main objective to launch this animated spin-off. In 2026 ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ will arrive, which we hope will go a little better.
