Conclaveby German director Edward Berger, is a clever and gripping thriller in the spirit of the times, based on the novel by British author Robert Harris.

The strength of the scenario is to create, from theelection of a new popea real suspense, dissecting the workings of power, locking the viewer into the very intimacy of the Vatican. Thus the story becomes a gripping political thriller from which faith is excluded.

Here is the trailer:

Lack of nuance

The entire aesthetic of the film, intended to be very dark (desperately leaden Roman sky, damaged gray or black walls), partially reflects this absence of hope, and underlines the heaviness and darkness of a system deliberately represented as obscure.

On the other hand, the overly Manichean treatment of the protagonists is regrettable, this lack of nuance in the “bad” Cardinal is almost laughable, and this binary vision of good guys/not nice guys is boring.

Unlike the fascinating reflection on the place of women in the hierarchy of the Church. Conclave is a beautiful echo of the nuns’ revolt of 2018. Isabella Rossellini radiates in her almost silent role as Mother Superior. Conclave will he resurrect the medieval story of Pope Joan, to shake things up?
