The new movie Evil Dead directed by Frenchman Sébastien Vaniček (Vermines) has a title, and a year of release.
It was the best Christmas present in 2023: the film horror and spiders Verminesdirected by Sébastien Vaniček and co-written with Florent Bernard. With its budget of 5 million euros, it had brought together nearly 270,000 people in French cinemas, knowing that the team had the ambition to pass the milestone of 150,000 admissions, considered a glass ceiling in the genre.
Noted in several major international festivals, nominated twice for the César (best first film and best visual effects), Vermines crawled into Hollywood, with a release on Shudder under the title Infested. And then the ultimate miracle took place: director Sébastien Vaniček caught the eye of Sam Raimi, who entrusted him with the reins of a new film Evil Dead.
It was February 2024, and since then Sébastien Vaniček and his co-writer Florent Bernard have worked in silence. But now, the project is taking shape with an official title, and a release slot.
EVIL DEAD THE RETURN
On Instagram, Sébastien Vaniček shared the first page of the script, with the title: Evil Dead Burn. Given the history of the saga with the flames and the destruction, it is a good choice, which also fits into the logic of the titles after Evil Dead Risereleased in 2023.
In the caption, the filmmaker also indicated a release date information: 2026. You will therefore have to be patient.
EVIL DEAD LA SUITE, LE REMAKE, LE REBOOT ?
Chez Firstin February 2024, Sébastien Vaniček explained that he had accepted by having in mind the main risk : become a simple performer who packages an impersonal film. He therefore set his conditions:
“When they asked me to think about an Evil Dead film, I set my requirements: shoot with my technicians, do post-production in France, write the screenplay… It was good, it was their idea that this i.e. a 100% original film, of which I would have total control. (…). For the moment – and I hope this will not change – the main character speaks in English, but is French, and finds himself surrounded by American characters.
But I absolutely want to keep my French DNA. All things considered and in all humility, I want to make a James Cameron move on Aliens. That is to say, let us know that this Evil Dead is mine, that it bears my signature. […] I don’t want to get lost in a franchise and just do one more Evil Dead. »
Evil Dead Burn was presented as a spin-off, which would mean that the story does not bring back any known character until then. Knowing that at the same time, a seventh Evil Dead is in development with director and screenwriter Francis Galluppi, who Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have repeatedly declared to want to bring back Ash, and who Lee Cronin hoped to make a sequel to his Evil Dead Rise.
The franchise is therefore far from being dead and buried, and that is understandable. Released in 2023, Evil Dead Rise had met with great success, with nearly 150 million at the box office for a budget of less than 20 million. It was much better than the Evil Dead from 2013, directed by Fede Álvarez, which had not reached 100 million for an equivalent budget.
And otherwise, don’t forget: the series Ash vs Evil Dead is a marvel, and it’s always a good time to see it again.
