While the sequel to “Wolfs” had been announced even before the release of the film with Brad Pitt and George Clooney, it was ultimately canceled. The fault lies with an Apple decision which greatly disappointed Jon Watts.
Wolfs will ultimately have no sequel
This year marked the return to the screen of the Brad Pitt-George Clooney duo. The two men were on the poster for Wolfsdirected by Jon Watts and released on Apple TV+ on September 27. They embodied two fixers called to the same crime scene and forced to work together duringa night full of surprises.
While Wolfs wasn’t even released yet, Apple made the decision to give it a sequel. This was announced at the beginning of August. But at the same time, we learned that Apple had chosen to reduce the length of time the film is released in theaters. The idea was to highlight its release on Apple TV+. Gold, this decision buried the project for a sequel.
Jon Watts gives the reason and tackles Apple
As part of the promotion of its new series, Skeleton CrewJon Watts recently gave an interview to Collider. He explained that there would undoubtedly be no follow-up to Wolfs. Shortly after, this information has been confirmedand the filmmaker gave the reason in another interview with Deadline. He shot Apple with red bullets. He explained that this was due to the platform’s decision to limit the release of the film to cinemas. And this, without even having consulted it:
Their last minute decision to move from a wide theatrical release to a streaming release came as a complete surprise and was made without any explanation or discussion. I wasn’t even told until less than a week before they announced it to the public. I was completely shocked and asked them not to reveal that I was writing the sequel. They ignored my request and announced the news in their press release. So I discreetly returned the money they had given me for the sequel. I didn’t want to talk about it because I was proud of the film and I didn’t want to generate unnecessary negative press. I loved working with Brad and George (and Amy, Austin, Poorna, and Zlatko), and would happily do so again. But the truth is that Apple has not canceled the Wolfs sequel. I did it, because I no longer trust them as a creative partner.
This is not the first time that a director has taken out the sulphate to attack a streaming service. Last January, Doug Liman smashed Amazon decision-makers following their choice not to go out Road House at the cinema.
The director will soon be back with Skeleton Crew
During his interview with ColliderJon Watts also explained that he did not yet know what his next project would be. But he therefore completed the filming of the series Skeleton Crewwhich will be released soon. This new story set in the universe of Star Wars takes place between the events of episode 6, Return of the Jediand the series Ahsoka. It will arrive from December 4 on Disney+. An episode will be released every week.
As for Brad Pitt, he will be on display in F1 next year. Joseph Kosinski’s new film will be released in cinemas in France June 25, 2025. George Clooney will play the leading role in Noah Baumbach’s new feature film, Jay Kelly. This will be released on Netflix, on a date still unknown.
