As the band Aerosmith sings: “Sweet Emotion“. Two weeks after its release, Vice-Versa 2 does not reduce its sails and signs a third weekend at the top of the American box office. An exceptional maintenance, which allows this sequel to reach the billion dollar mark worldwide, a first in 2024.

Pixar back on top of the world

The latest production from the Luxo lamp house thus raked in $57.4 million for its third weekend of operation in the United States. The film once again shows good retention of spectators (-43% compared to last weekend), after a second weekend which had already fallen very little (-34% only).

This brings the US total to Vice-Versa 2 at $469 million. The film is on track to become Pixar’s second biggest hit in the United States, aiming to surpass the domestic record held by The Incredibles 2 (608 million). For the moment, it has already done better than Toy Story 4 (434 millions), The Lion King (423 million) and Shrek 2 (445 millions).

The success is even more striking internationally, where the feature film has smashed the billion dollar mark in just 17 days. It thus becomes the fastest animated film to reach this impressive milestone in history, as well as the first film of the year 2024 to reach this milestone. Now, Vice-Versa 2 can dream of going to look for Frozen 2 (1.4 billion) or even The Lion King 2019 version ($1.6 billion) to become the highest-grossing animated hit of all time.

Box office records are also being broken in the sequel, as the prequel Quietly: Day 1 launched with $53 million, marking the best start for this horror franchise. The film thus did better than the first film of 2018 (50 million) and its sequel (47 million).

This is also the second best start for actress Lupita Nyong’o after Us by Jordan Peele (71.1 million), if we do not take into account his Star Wars and Marvel films. The franchise has already generated $730 million worldwide, and a Without a sound 3 is planned for 2025.

But it’s not a party for everyone, and especially not for Kevin Costner. The first part of Horizonhis $100 million self-financed epic Western, debuted at number three on the charts, with just $11 million in its bag. A flop by any measure, the opus failed to shake off its status as an anachronistic production.

Released in 2003, Open RangeCostner’s last western (and last film), had generated 68 million worldwide. As a reminder, the actor-director had enjoyed public and critical acclaim in 1990 thanks to the cult film Dancing with the wolveswhich had grossed $424 million worldwide and won seven Oscars.
