This moving drama has seduced generations of spectators. There is still time to discover it in streaming, and above all without paying.
Some streaming platforms offer free (re)discovery of cult films that have marked generations of spectators. For a few more days, it is possible to watch one of them on the France Télévision website: rated 4.4/5 by more than 2,000 readers of Linternaute, this dramatic comedy shocked the public and remains timeless, 34 years after its release.
The plot immerses spectators in the late 1950s, in a prestigious and rigid school in the United States. The brilliant students, destined for great studies, meet a professor of English literature with teaching practices in total opposition to the values of this austere institute: he advocates non-conformism, the development of personality through poetry, and enjoying the present moment and freedom. This teaching will forever change these students corseted in a vision of the world narrowed by their parents, or their other teachers.
Directed by Peter Weir, The circle of deceased poets is a dramatic comedy that features big names in American cinema: the late Robin Williams (Will Hunting, Madame Doubtfire) plays the role of this professor-poet, opposite Ethan Hawke (Welcome to Gattaca, Black Phone, Before Sunrise), or Robert Sean Leonard (Doctor House).
And suffice to say that this film has enjoyed popular success since its release in 1990, becoming cult thanks to its line “Oh Captain, my Captain!”. On Linternaute, most of the opinions are rave, some praising a “magnificent” and “cult” film, “which makes you love literature and which makes you want to be free”. “I have tears in my eyes every time I see him again,” writes one of them, while another believes that “from the first minute to the last, Robin Williams is breathtaking.”
The circle of deceased poets is available for free without payment or subscription. It is therefore on the france.tv platform that you must go to (re)discover this film, free of charge. Be careful, however, because you won’t have to wait long: on December 3, the drama led by Robin Williams leaves the streaming platform.
