Guillermo Del Toro gives his opinion on Clint Eastwood’s latest film

After renting The Substance et MegalopolisGuillermo Del Toro this time looked at Juror No. 2 de Clint Eastwood.

This is one of the great mysteries of the end of 2024: how Warner was able to sacrifice the release of Juror No. 2 ? We know that the studio boss, David Zaslav, did everything to ensure that Clint Eastwood’s film had a tiny theatrical release (in the United States at least). The reason? The financial losses caused by the filmmaker’s previous films would have annoyed the CEO: Cry Macho had grossed only $16.5 million worldwide for a budget of $33 million and Le cas Richard Jewell had brought in 44.6 million for 45% of the budget.

Warner therefore thought, a priori, that Juror No. 2 (with its budget of around 35 million) was doomed to fail at the cinema. Error, since apart from in the United States (where the film is visible in only 7 cinemas), Eastwood’s legal thriller is a hit particularly in (where it should reach one million admissions) and in Spain where it is at the top of the current box office. Even more, it was rather well received by critics. Faced with this injustice, some have stepped up to the plate, including Guillermo Del Toro.

JUROR, it’s bullshit

For once, it was not on Twitter/X that the director spoke about a film but on the social network Blue Sky (increasingly popular since the election of Trump at the beginning of November and the distrust towards the billionaire Elon Musk, owner of As relayed World of Reelhere’s what Guillermo Del Toro said about Juror No. 2 :

“I went to the cinema to see Juror #2, the latest Clint Eastwood film. We enjoyed it immensely. It is, in a way, his Crimes and Misdemeanors [film de Woody Allen, ndlr]. The film is filmed with precision and confidence, and Nicolas Hoult plays the main role. The actors are up to par and the ending made the room vibrate.

His central dilemma reminded me of the silent torment that bubbles up within Dana Andrews in Otto Preminger’s noir films (it’s up to you to choose which one, I lean towards Mark Dixon, detective) and he holds her back, thanks to a well-paced structure and well-thought-out twists and turns. »

Let’s listen to Master Del Toro

A nice support from the Mexican who also rightly wondered why the film was not entitled to a release worthy of the name, since as a reminder, the film was released in its maximum configuration in 50 cinemas on American territory (a ridiculous exploitation therefore since Juror No. 2 still has 449 copies in France after three weeks). In any case, Guillermo Del Toro also took the time to recall the importance of Clint Eastwood:

“Clint Eastwood is a master of cinema. His seriousness and his unfussy art prove that he is still in great shape. »

If you were hesitant to discover the filmmaker’s latest film, this is a good reason to go to theaters, since it is still available in cinemas in France.
