France: the scathing opinion of the Italian press after the whistles during the Marseillaise

Last night, the French team knew they were eagerly awaited in Milan for their Nations League match against Italy. We know that the Italians do not greatly appreciate the French and made it known yesterday by insulting the Marseillaise. In response, the Squadra Azzurra players decided to applaud the French anthem to counterbalance. If this initiative was very logically welcomed, La Gazzetta dello Sport was however not kind to the people who decided to scold and even demanded measures from the Federation.

The violent charge of La Gazzetta against a “nationalist” public!

Indeed, the charge was virulent: “A public soaked in nationalism, for which the adversary is only the enemy (…) A sad spectacle. When will there be an FIGC campaign to educate the ignorant?” asks the transalpine daily. As a reminder, it is quite common for the French anthem to be whistled on the other side of the Alps. This had already been the case during the Final Four of the League of Nations in 2021, even if it had been less nourished at the time since the Blues had not faced the Azzurri.
