Now expected on May 21, 2025, after yet another postponement of its release date, “Mission Impossible 8” would have seen its production budget climb to reach $300 million. Which would be the record of the saga.

Even more than the mysterious Gabriel (Esai Morales) and the AI for which he works, Covid will have been Ethan Hunt’s most formidable adversary. Because it will have thwarted the plans of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie and impacted the production of the last two opuses to date in the Mission: Impossible saga, between postponements of all kinds and rising costs.

And this is how, according to Puck News, the production budget for the eighth episode, now expected in our theaters on May 21, 2025, would have climbed to reach $300 million. This is the record for the spy franchise, just ahead of the 291 from the seventh film, Dead Reckoning.

Information which, if it remains to be taken with a grain of salt until it is confirmed, remains plausible. Because filming all over the world is expensive, just like the incredible stunts that Tom Cruise performs, in terms of logistics, preparation and execution.

And then there are the numerous postponements. Originally, Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were to be filmed one after the other. Which was not possible because of Covid and the fact that Tom Cruise had to promote Top Gun: Maverick. Already well advanced, pre-production was therefore also postponed, which has a cost.

Especially if a few members were among those whose salaries were paid by production when it was impossible for them to shoot anything during the pandemic. Then there are these shots spread over more than two years and still not finished at present, interspersed by the release of Dead Reckoning last summer.

From one record to another?

This is undoubtedly not all, but the reasons for this increase in budget are undoubtedly to be found in this area. And this means that the feature film will have to bring in at least $600 million worldwide to make this production budget profitable (because the revenue does not only go into the coffers of its studio)… to which marketing costs will then have to be added.

In addition to saving the world, once again, Ethan Hunt may well have to beat another record next May: that of the best result of the franchise at the box office (still held by Fallout and its 791.7 million greenbacks). ). So as not to lose too much money in theaters. A truly impossible mission?
