Five movies about dads doing their best

Even if he knows how to be strong and reassuring, a father also has the right to fully experience his emotions, whatever they may be. When situations beyond his control arise, he must react quickly and take matters into his own hands…or at least try, as in these five films.

Accustomed to having to extricate himself from unfortunate situations, Mark Wahlberg has a major challenge in this action comedy. Not only does he have to deal with his past as a hitman, he also has to hide this side of his life from his small family which includes a wife and three children, one of whom is still on a bottle. Before revealing his true identity, he leaves for Vegas where, according to him, lies the solution to his problems and the chance to put an end to this meeting with his past.

The strong presence of Anthony Hopkins – won an Oscar – colors this whole drama. He plays a father figure who is not kind to his daughter nor those who are entrusted with the task of caring for her. At the age of 80, a man must deal with a strong enemy: dementia. Yet he still wants to dictate how things will happen. There is a glimmer of hope, however, that a young woman will manage to spend some quality time. However, this insight will disturb the old man, because the young woman is not who he thinks she is…

These two comedies from the 1990s are among the best-known titles in Steve Martin’s filmography. He plays a fully fulfilled father and husband. However, happiness being fragile, it takes two big blows. First, his only daughter tells him that she is now engaged. Then, the shock of the marriage having passed (or almost), the young woman reveals that she is pregnant. So, not only is he a stepfather, he’s about to become a grandfather! A shaken man, you say?

With all the intensity we know, but also great restraint, Kevin Hart takes the lead in this dramatic comedy inspired by a true story. This story is that of a man who becomes the sole parent of a one-day-old newborn, after the sudden death of his wife. By force of circumstances, he will take care of all the tasks related to the education of his daughter, an endearing child. Of course he will seek help; however, he will want to invest himself entirely in his daughter’s life. He will draw the necessary strength from within himself and will succeed in believing in his abilities.

It’s not easy to play stepfather and be loved by the children of your conquest. It’s not because we have love to give and want to be loved that it happens. But it’s even less obvious when the children’s biological father – cool, strong and attractive at the same time – shows up and gets all the attention. Obviously, this awakens a competitive spirit… with all the unfortunate consequences that this can have. A comedy starring two movie stars who need no introduction: Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.
