A successful video game franchise from independent studio Red Barrels since 2013, Outlast is preparing to take a new turn in its career. Like the film Silent Hill released in 2006, the developers reveal that the horror game will be brought to the big screen, its adaptation will be handled by the Lionsgate studio.

Outlast: the film couldn’t have hoped for a better screenwriter

We can clearly say that the company is accustomed to the horror genre since the latter already has numerous adaptations of this style in its catalog: See No Evil, The Last Exorcism or even the SAW film saga. To support this project, the company decided to call on JT Petty who will be in charge of the scenario.

Known in the world of cinema for his participation in the films Mimic and Sentinel, the man is also a familiar face in video games. Indeed, it is to him that we owe the scenarios of the different Outlast games. In addition, those who are older may remember that Petty also participated in the writing of another license, which has now become legendary… Splinter Cell.

If the exercise of adapting a work from a video game is always very delicate, Petty’s CV and his knowledge of the Outlast universe leads us to believe that this film already has a solid basis to become a success in dark rooms. With the film now in progress, JT Petty took the opportunity to express his excitement about this challenge.

Red Barrels has been pushing the boundaries of horror in games for over a decade, and expanding the Outlast universe to cinema is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love.

No stranger to horror films, Roy Lee (In Quarantine, The Strangers, Until Dawn) will be the producer of this adaptation for which he had a few words:

When Outlast released in 2012, it changed the horror gaming landscape, setting a new standard for immersion in the genre. Its deep, emerging story provided a perfect foundation for creating a film that explores the psychological and physical horrors at the heart of the franchise. I’m excited to bring this unique world to life for new viewers and dedicated fans of the series.

With work on the Outlast movie having only just begun, it’s a safe bet that we’ll have to wait a while before we get our first look at it. No release date has been announced by Lionsgate as of this writing.
