Described as a kind of Goonies in Star Wars style, the show takes place in the same chronology as The Mandalorian et The Book of Boba Fett. When the series was announced at Star Wars Celebration 2022, its executive producer Jon Watts clarified that although Skeleton Crew features a group of children, this is not a series for children.

Skeleton Crew is written by Jon Watts (Spider-Man : Far From Home) et Christopher Ford (Spider-Man : Homecoming) and its eight episodes are successively directed by Watts, David Lowery (The Green Knight), the duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Mandalorian) and Lee Isaac Chung (Twisters).

The series is produced by Susan McNamara and John Bartnick, with other executive producers Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson.
