Have you ever imagined a book becoming a reality? Well that’s the subject The Babadookan Australian film released in 2014 – and which therefore celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Except that we’re not talking about a SF novel or a tale where everything is rosy… Mister Babadook is, in the universe created by Jennifer Kent (the director), a “children’s book” where a young boy is chased by a terrifying creature, wearing a top hat. You will have understood it, this creature, it will little by little invite itself into the real world. Amelia and her son Sam will see their daily lives change for the worse. The little one is convinced that Babadook exists.

A broken life

Slowly but surely, the lives of the two characters – played respectively by Essie Davis and Noé Wiseman – will fall apart. First, Samuel’s behavior becomes more and more suspicious, then, disturbing events occur within the family cocoon. The whole thing does not seem unrelated to the trauma of the mother and her son : Just before Sam is born, his father, Oska – and Amelia’s husband – dies tragically in a car accident.

Well, of course, saying that doesn’t make you want to live life to the fullest… But, if you’re looking for a good horror film (currently available on Amazon Prime), well, The Babadook is probably made for you! On the reference site Rotten Tomatoes, the feature film receives a 98% from the press… Critics particularly welcome the absence of jump scares – for the benefit of a cleverly orchestrated atmosphere – as well as a “sincere” and “moving” story. On Allociné, opinions are more mixed (3.5 according to the media). In short, you might as well form your own opinion, right?
