Post-apocalyptic has been in fashion for several decades. This popular subgenre of science fiction regularly warns humanity against future catastrophes and our propensity for self-destruction. A little over 10 years ago, Brad Pitt faced a new kind of pandemic on the big screen. Heavily criticized when it was released in the cinema, this sci-fi film finally conquered the box office.

A popular cinema success for Brad Pitt

The film that interests us today is the cinematic adaptation of a novel written in 2006 by author J. Michael Straczynski. Director Marc Forster, who notably directed Quantum of Solace from the James Bond saga, tackles the figure of the zombie in 2013 with the aim of dusting it off. Unfortunately, World War Z with Brad Pitt in the lead role divides critics who are only 67% recommending its viewing according to RottenTomatoes compared to 72% for spectators.

Opinions on this apocalyptic feature film, the ending of which was completely reversed following decisions taken by the various production companies involved in the project, differ. Some are generally positive: “It’s actually quite remarkable that this movie turned out to be even remotely good, considering the terrible production and reshoot of the entire last act.” Others at on the contrary are not very convinced by the proposition: “If we ignore all this spectacle, we end up with something rather unoriginal.” In the end, World War Z grossed US$540.5 million at the box office for a budget estimated between 190 and 269 million. The public has decided.

The synopsis of World War Z: During their daily commute, Gerry Lane and his family find themselves stuck in a monster traffic jam. A former United Nations investigator, Lane quickly understands that the situation is unusual. As police helicopters crisscross the sky and bikers crisscross the streets, the city suddenly descends into chaos! People violently attack each other and a deadly virus spreads. Lane has no choice but to return to duty to protect his family. The UN agrees to shelter them on a military cargo ship, but he must go on a mission to identify the origin of this threat and find a way to stop its spread… – (TF1+)
