The casting of Lord of the Rings pays tribute to Bernard Hill who died on Sunday.

Several members of the cast of Lord of the Rings paid tribute to their former colleague Bernard Hill during Liverpool Comic Con on May 5.

Actors Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who played the famous group of hobbits in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, paid tribute to the actor on stage at the convention, hours after the announcement of his death at the age of 79.

“We lost a family member this morning. Bernard Hill has died. King Théoden,” said Sean Astin, referring to the British actor’s character. “We want to take a moment, before leaving the stage, to pay tribute to him. He had to be here. He was supposed to be here today and yesterday. We like it. He was fearless, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was handsome.”

Billy Boyd added: “I don’t think anyone has expressed the words of [l’auteur J. R. R.] Tolkien as well as Bernard. The way he grounded those words in reality. He broke my heart. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.”

Bernard Hill played King Théoden in the second and third installments of the Lord of the Rings, The two towers And The king’s return. He was scheduled to attend the convention over the weekend, but had to pull out of the event.

Elijah Wood also posted a photo of the actor on X with the caption: “Long live our friend, our king, Bernard Hill. We will never forget you.”

Dominic Monaghan shared the same photo on Instagram and commented: “The broken king has passed into gray havens, but he will always be remembered.”

Apart from the trilogy adapted from JR R Tolkien’s novels, Bernard Hill was also known for his roles in Titanic, The Scorpion King, Valkyrie and the television series Boys From The Blackstuff.
