first images for the gory horror film from the director of Revenge

After revengethe Frenchwoman Coralie Fargeat returns with The Substancea feminist body horror film that looks bloody in its first images.

The Cannes Film Festival is fast approaching and inevitably, the studios are starting to accelerate the promotion of their foal. Before the start of the festivities, Le Pacte revealed a trailer for Megalopolis, the great fresco by Francis Ford Coppola, Disney flanked itself with a crazy teaser for Kinds of Kindness and Diaphana released a quirky trailer for The Second Act by Quentin Dupieux before the opening on May 14.

Others have already had the right to a few photos like The Shrouds by David Cronenberg, Anora by Sean Baker or the very intriguing phew love by Gilles Lellouche. And this time, it’s the turn of The Substance by Coralie Fargeat, director of revenge, to reveal oneself. The film has been described as a “explosive and feminist vision of body horror” And its first images promise no less, as does its synopsis.

Demi Moore’s big comeback

Bloody revenge

With the exception of this small description and the words of Thierry Fremaux, depicting The Substance like an “assumed gore film”, not much was known about the film at the moment. With these first two images, where we see Demi Moore on the phone (above) and a body with a long scar on its back in a bathroom (below), The Substance still remains very mysterious but fortunately, a first synopsis of the film revealed a lot more:

“Have you ever dreamed of a better version of yourself? You should try this new product: The Substance. It changed my life. With The Substance, you can generate another version of yourself, younger, more beautiful, more perfect… Just share the time One week for one, one week for the other. A perfect balance of seven days, isn’t it? Could this go wrong?”

The Substance: photoThat’s a lot of stitches…

Given this synopsis, we can obviously suspect that the use of this famous product will very quickly turn into a nightmare. Enough to offer a cynical commentary on our addiction to marketing and an allegorical reflection on our obsession with appearances and eternal youth, all in one big violent and brutal pleasure? Likely. Body horror will in any case be at the heart of The Substance whose pitch is reminiscent of the episode The prison of appearances from the Serie Guillermo Del Toro’s cabinet of curiosities on Netflix, directed by Ana Lily Armirpour.

One thing is certain, all this new information gives us additional reasons to wait for the film. Demi Moore will play the main character and with this synopsis, it would seem logical that Margaret Qualley, also in the cast, plays her rejuvenated version after using the famous product. The verdict will fall quickly since The Substance will be presented in Cannes.
