Once upon a time, there lived a poor woodcutter and a poor woodcutter who lived deep in a Polish forest. Poor woodcutter lamented not having children. Once upon a time, a Jewish family – two newborn twins and their parents – were arrested in Paris and then deported to the Auschwitz camp. On the train that was taking them to certain death, the father made a foolish gesture. In a final and paltry hope, he threw one of his twins out of the train. This story is the one told in The most valuable commoditythe new film by Michel Hazanavicius which has just been selected in official competition au Cannes Film Festival 2024. With this film d’animationthe French director made his big return to the Croisette, two years after opening the festivities with his film Cut!.
If it is the only animated feature film to compete this year in the official selection, it is also the first animated film by Michel Hazanavicius which adapts, for the occasion, the novel of the same name written by Jean-Claude Grumberg in 2019.
