25th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace | Unraveling Star Wars

The Star Wars universe is impressively rich, which can be intimidating for the uninitiated. Particularly because the three trilogies were not filmed in the chronological order of the story. On the eve of May 4, the day celebrating the creation of George Lucas, let’s unite: here are the nine films in the saga summarized in order.

Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)






Young Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) is discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) on the isolated planet Tatooine. The latter notices the powerful connection between the boy and the Force and then decides to take him to Coruscant, capital of the Galactic Republic, where Princess Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) must plead in a dispute between her planet Naboo and the Trade Federation . The conflict escalates and the Sith threat is revealed.

Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)






Ten years later, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), Qui-Gon’s former apprentice, is Anakin’s (Hayden Christensen) master. Under the influence of Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), an ex-Jedi, thousands of planetary systems secede from the Republic. A loyalist, Padmé, now a senator, is the victim of an assassination attempt. While Obi-Wan investigates and discovers that the Republic is equipping itself with an army of clones, Anakin has the responsibility of protecting Padmé.

Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)






For three years, the conflict between the Republic and the Separatists has raged across the galaxy. Obi-Wan and Anakin go to the rescue of Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), kidnapped by Count Dooku. Back on Coruscant, Palpatine appoints Anakin to the Jedi Council, while its members ask him to monitor the Chancellor whom they suspect of being the Sith Lord behind the war.

Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)






Approximately 19 years after the Clone Wars, the robot R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), recently acquired by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), projects a message from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) invoking the aid of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness). The latter reveals to the young man that his father was a Jedi master. Smugglers Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) lead Obi-Wan and Luke to the sidereal base where the princess is held captive by Darth Vader (voice of James Earl Jones).

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)






After destroying the Death Star, the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction, the Rebel Alliance, which includes Princess Leia among its generals, is hunted by Imperial forces led by Darth Vader. Meanwhile, Luke finds the venerable Master Yoda (voice of Frank Oz), reclusive on the planet Dagobah, in order to begin his Jedi training. However, he interrupts his apprenticeship to help his friends stuck in Cloud City.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)






Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) as well as the robots R2-D2 and C-3 in (Anthony Daniels) come together on Tatooine to free Han from the powerful criminal Jabba the Hutt. Returning to the Alliance, the group takes part in a coordinated attack against the new Death Star. Luke chooses to turn himself in to Darth Vader in order to confront him and Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).

Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)






Thirty years after the fall of the Empire, the First Order emerges from its ashes. The New Republic is defended by the Resistance, led by Leia Organa. To assist her, she commissions pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) to find Luke, in exile. Taken prisoner by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Poe is freed by stormtrooper FN-2187 (John Boyega) who defects. They crash on Jakku where he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley).

Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)






As the First Order attempts to exterminate the Resistance following the setback it inflicted on them, Rey finds Luke on Ahch-To to begin his Jedi training. She hopes that her learning will also allow her to discover her origins, having no memory of her parents. The apprentice and Kylo will begin a telepathic communication at the same time which will bring them closer together, despite their rival allegiances. Rey joins Kylo in hopes of getting him to change sides.

Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)






A year later, Kylo discovers that Palpatine is still alive and is behind the emergence of the First Order. Palpatine orders him to kill Rey, who continues her training with Leia. Poe and Finn learn from a spy where Palpatine is: Exegol. With Rey, Chewbacca as well as the robots C-3 po, R2-D2 and BB-8, they set off in search of clues to lead them to their destination.
