A film that does not leave the audience indifferent… Wednesday November 6, 2024, The Substance will be released in theaters in France. In it, Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, an actress whose career ends when she is replaced by a woman younger than her. Her eviction then pushes her to inject herself with an experimental drug which brings out an identical version of her, much younger, from Elisabeth’s bloody spine…

Through this film, director Coralie Gargeat wanted to focus on the physical and psychological violence that people are capable of inflicting on themselves to regain their youth. Tuesday September 3, 2024, in an interview with the LA Times, Demi Moore explained: What makes this work so powerful is really what it does to itself. The storyline took something that is very internalized violence against oneself and externalized it in a way that allowed the audience to have some objectivity and really see what we do to ourselves through this criticism and this harsh and constant comparison”.

Demi Moore: “It could be great or a f*cking disaster”

During this interview, the director of the film, Coralie Fargeat added: “I recently read a tagline in an article about the film that said, ‘Being a woman means body horror.’ The film can be scary on many levelsbut the first concerns playing with the violence of what we do to our bodies”.

In another interview, Bruce Willis’ ex-wife explained: “When I read The Substance, I thought, ‘Wow, this could be really great – or it could be a f*cking disaster.’ of course I had to say yes. I feel like Ghost was very similar, but I think when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone and it scares us, it always makes us a little better. Even if it fails”.

Spectators unconvinced by The Substance

On X (formerly Twitter), many Internet users revealed their reaction when leaving the room. “My date wouldn’t let me walk him home after The Substance because ‘we haven’t seen each other long enough’ for him to throw up in front of me. He literally went home in the rain to throw up with dignity. A five-star film”said a user. Another added: “I think I just saw the most disgusting movie ever. The Substance, starring Demi Moore. If I can describe it in one word, it sucks.”.

On YouTube, a user added: “Nothing prepared me for this movie. I watched this trailer for 20 seconds, turned it off and went to the theater. I was completely blown away. The craziest movie I’ve ever seen never seen. I had to look away from the screen several times…. The Sun also reported that a spectator said: “At least 20 people left the cinema before the end of my screening in Leicester Square. It was brutal. Most people watched it with their hands in front of their faces. It’s the rawest film that I have never seen”.
