It is certainly the film that highlighted the full talent of Luca Guadagnino. In 2017, the filmmaker offers us Call me by your namea real gem that makes us want to spend our summer under the overwhelming Italian sun.
With Call me by your name Luca Guadagnino succeeds in accurately capturing the first emotions of Elio, a teenager who falls under the spell of his father’s captivating (and a little arrogant) American assistant, for a summer. Love and desire are at the heart of the feature film which takes place in northern Italy in the 1980s.
Call me by your name was a real revelation. Its delicate staging, its excellent soundtrack, its polished aesthetic and the remarkable performance of Timothée Chalamet left their mark, as did the monologue of Elio’s father, performed by Michael Stuhlbarg. The feature film won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay and earned Timothée Chalamet the Golden Globe for best dramatic actor. A springboard for the young performer but also for the Italian filmmaker. To note that Call me by your name is the final opus of the Desire Trilogy, with Love And A Bigger Splash. Bones & All (2022)
A few years later, Luca Guadagnino returned with Bones & All. Love and Timothée Chalamet are always there. With this film, the director makes us a… bloody proposition. Maren is not a young girl like the others. When her father abandons her, she decides to follow in the footsteps of her mother, who abandoned them when she was born. On her way, she meets Lee, a young boy who seems to understand her. Together, they embark on an extraordinary road trip and begin a passionate love story, but their demons and their past lie in wait for them…
Powerful and intense, Bones & All is confusing. Despite the presence of hemoglobin in abundance, the film displays a contradictory softness. Far from what we are used to seeing, Bones & All seduced by its staging and its actors, more invested than ever.
Bones & All allowed the Italian filmmaker to win the Silver Lion for best director and Taylor Russell to take home the Marcello Mastroianni prize (equivalent to best hopeful) at the Venice Film Festival in 2022. The film can be viewed on Prime Video.

Suspiria (2019)
After Call me by your nameLuca Guadagnino wanted to make a 180° turn since Suspiria is a remake of the cult horror film of the same name by Dario Argento. We are therefore far from the sweetness of Elio’s first emotions… Strange and sinuous, this remake takes us to Berlin, while Susie joins the famous Helena Markos dance company. Even better ? She gets along well with the choreographer, Ms. Blanc. But over the course of rehearsals, Susie makes increasingly disturbing and terrifying discoveries…
In the casting of Suspiria, we find Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth as well as Chloe Grace Moretz. Although the feature film did not win any awards, it was still in competition for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2018. The film is available for purchase and rental on CANAL+ VOD.
