Surprise, the Ratatouille attraction returns to 2D at Disneyland Paris

After a period of testing during the first half of March and probable behind-the-scenes discussions between the different teams and management Disney Experiences in the USA, Disneyland Paris brought back the 2D version of the attraction Ratatouille: Rémy’s Totally Crazy Adventure At Walt Disney Studios Park. We do not know what the official reasons are for this change, which is now more akin to sustainability than a simple test to evaluate visitor feedback.

It’s the size of a rat!

This Friday April 26, 2023, Ratatouille: Rémy’s Totally Crazy Adventure returns to 2D version Disneyland Paris. Following the last tests carried out in March (no, it was not a simple maintenance operation despite what we may have said) and probably the (positive?) feedback from visitors, the attraction will be offered without 3D visual effects for an indefinite period. 3D glasses are therefore no longer distributed.

That this change is motivated by financial issues seems unlikely in the sense that the maintenance of 3D glasses does not represent a huge budget and colossal human resources. The transition from 3D to 2D in attractions Ratatouille: Rémy’s Totally Crazy Adventure is all in all quite simple to implement for maintenance teams and the video projectors are sufficiently sophisticated to be able to alternate between versions (with a simple click or almost). Without getting too far ahead of ourselves, Disney having not communicated any information on this subject (other than that provided by the Cast Members of the attraction last month), it would indeed be a decision of management and feedback of satisfaction from visitors during the testing period.

On today’s menu, Ratatouille in 2D

Is traveling without glasses more comfortable for the average visitor? Has 3D aged poorly in almost ten years or is it simply becoming obsolete given technological advances? Was it causing nausea more than before? Does removing glasses help limit breakdowns (glasses on the ground) and therefore improve visitor yield? Or quite simply, is the 2D version now considered much more qualitative than 3D, without this impacting the overall experience (even if, it must be remembered, the attraction was designed for 3D to provide a relief on the route…)?

Is all this ultimately very coherent when we know that the little sister of the attraction EPCOT favors the 3D version very popular with the American public?

Our opinion on this new version :

Feeling level, the course is pleasant in 2D. The concave screens help a lot with immersion. In the last scene, we come up against a flat, featureless wall, taking us out of the story. No longer having glasses opens the field of vision a little but necessarily reduces the perspective. There is good in both versions and an alternation between them would not be undesirable.
