It’s a sequel that no one expected, and yet, it could get a lot of attention. A few weeks after its formalization, the new trilogy 28 years later attract many glances. Its distribution is no stranger to this craze since Sony did not skimp on big names to ensure success in theaters. It must be said that the post-apocalyptic license has not taken over our screens for almost two decades, and that the aura of these stars could be a great way to remind the public of the good memories of the stamp. Zombies and cataclysmic events continue to fascinate Hollywood and audiences, so why not?

According to Deadline, Sony has already found its top three. While Cillian Murphy’s participation is expected to be limited to executive production, the narrative will follow new characters played by Jodie Cormer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. The first has built a solid reputation in the industry, after her remarkable performance in the series Killing Eve. The second multiplies his collaborations with David Leitch, he must face Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy. Taylor-Johnson is also one of the many stars to have collaborated with Sony at the heart of the Spider-Man universe, he is set to make his debut as Spider-Man. Kraven the Hunter at the start of the 2024 school year. Finally, Ralph Fiennes concludes this prestigious list. Note that Cillian Murphy is involved but in production only. The actor has not made the return of his character official.

A trilogy from the original creators

Developed under the working name “28 years later”, this new project should – as its name suggests – explore the world of Danny Boyle’s film written by Alex Garland. Released in 2003, it followed a courier who wakes up from a deep coma in a Desert London. While asleep, the world descended into chaos after the release of chimpanzees subjected to terrible experiments. What the Animal Protection commando activists didn’t know was that they were carriers of a mysterious virus which can be transmitted to humans. Five years after this phenomenon, a sequel was born under the leadership of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. New political issues, new characters and new actors, the film evolved in a completely different context with an American family at the epicenter.

For the moment, apart from the temporality, we do not know much about this new incursion into the universe. It will be made through three films intended for cinemas. For its big return, the license finds its creators since Alex Garland and Danny Boyle will respectively be writing and directing the first opus. Next up is director Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) who will be responsible for bringing the story of the second part to life. She will also be behind the camera. Moreover, we know that Sony Pictures does not do things by halves and plans to pay 75 million dollars per film. This is much more than the envelope allocated to 28 days laterwhich had cost the modest sum of 8 million dollars in 2003. It remains to be seen whether the public will be there.
