Deadpool 3 will bring back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and Marvel may have found the solution to not taint his heartbreaking farewell in Logan.

Marvel Studios’ only film in 2024, Deadpool 3 has blown it all away in its new trailer, which gives pride of place to the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The MCU’s first R-rated feature film, the project has the merit of arousing our curiosity and promises a new orgy of multiversal fan-service.

But the return of the clawed mutant also poses a fundamental question, namely how the film will treat its tragic end. According to the director, Wolverine’s return in Deadpool 3 don’t erase Logan, but we have the right to doubt these remarks. And with the latest images revealed, we have perhaps a start of an answer on Marvel’s solution.

Multi-Logan

The new trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine opens with an alcoholic and suicidal Logan in a bar. Nothing new under the sun you could say. However, it is an important indication: this is not the same Wolverine as in Loganwhich took place in a post-apocalyptic future where mutants have been exterminated.

He is obviously younger, but seems just as traumatized. To avoid erasing his tragic death (and crucial for the character’s story), Marvel could have used the Multiverse to get around the problem. Either by taking the Wolverine from the Fox films at a point between X-Men: Days of Future Past And Loganor by taking outright a variant with a different story.

What happened to this Wolverine?

Whatever universe it originates from, this version of the clawed mutant’s X-Men teammates are dead. This is the case in Logan, where the massacre was obviously caused by Professor X losing control of his powers. But in Deadpool 3Wolverine himself could be the trigger of this disastrous event.

The film could thus be inspired by the comics Old Man LoganOr the hero kills his teammates under the influence of an illusion of Mysterio. By modifying a few elements of its history without betraying what it is in the eyes of the general public, Marvel can easily work around the problem Logan with a variant. And if the studio probably can’t use Mysterio (which is owned by Sony), why not make use of the announced antagonist of the feature film: the powerful telepath Cassandra Nova, sister of Charles Xavier?

Deadpool & Wolverine: photoThe giant remains of Ant-Man as in… Old Man Logan

An easy way to connect the different elements of the plot and give substance to the personal conflict of this Wolverine, even if this one is a little different from the one we are used to seeing. Alongside a Deadpool desperate to save his universe, this would offer this duo a real emotional charge and which would allow the film to go further than the simple funny buddy movie.

Response in theaters from July 24, 2024 in France.
