In 1997, Joe Dante, with a script by Canadian Martyn Burke, directed one of his best films for HBO, The Second Civil War: a devastating satirical comedy based on the refusal of a governor to welcome refugees into his state and the president’s decision to show firmness to bring this secessionist back into the fold of the Union. Nothing like that in Civil Warby Englishman Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Men), which imagines the Disunited States already engaged in a new civil war whose causes we will never know. As soon as news of an improbable coalition led by California and Texas (!) against a seemingly populist president, any resemblance with American political reality is blurred. Wise decision, so as not to add fuel to the Trumpian fire?
