A new version of “The Night of the Hunter”, an iconic film noir, is in preparation. And the project was entrusted to a director and screenwriter who has proven himself in the horror genre.
The hunter’s nighta cult work which will have its remake
Released in 1955 and based on the book of the same name by Davis Grubb, The hunter’s night tells the story ofa killer released from prison after sharing his cell with a man who had hidden a large sum of money. When he finds freedom, the killer leaves the pursuit of this man’s childrenthe only ones to know the location of the jackpot.
Directed by Charles Laughton and notably worn by Robert Mitchum, The hunter’s night is considered by many to be one of the best feature films of the 1950s. And one of best black films to have ever been made. A sign of its great reputation, it is for example part of the list of 50 films to see before the age of 14 drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2005. However, like other iconic works before it, he will be entitled to a remake.
Two horror specialists at the helm
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Universal is preparing a new version of The hunter’s night. And the studio has already chosen who to entrust this project to. So, it’s Scott Derricksonwho will direct the feature film, based on a screenplay that he wrote with C. Robert Cargill. The duo previously worked together on Doctor Strangebut also two horror films: Sinister and more recently Black Phone.
Thrill-seekers may therefore think that The hunter’s night is in good hands. Because Derrickson and Cargill have already proven that they have mastered the horror genre. As reported by Movie Webin 2020, a scientific study which recorded the reactions of spectators to several films of this genre by measuring their heart rate had established that Sinister was the movie the most terrifying in history.
Another project to finish before this one
Derrickson and Cargill will, however, finish another project before tackling the new version of the film which was directed by Charles Laughton. Always according to The Hollywood Reporterthey are currently busy finishing Black Phone 2. The film will be released on June 25, 2025 in French cinemas. We can therefore think that the new The hunter’s night won’t happen for a while.
