The Vermeille coast and the Costa Brava, north of Catalonia, united by a coastal path. Objective: to tighten the links between the two territories a little more and also promote seasonal and sustainable tourism. It is a 250-kilometer route between Racou beach in Argelès-sur-Mer and Malgrat de Mar in the Maresme, north of Barcelona.
The project is colossal but not enough to scare the Catalan association “Camí de Mar”, at the origin of the proposal which has already received the approval of several mayors in the area concerned. Cuils who join the association to ask the competent authorities of the two countries to make this route a reality.
It was during a hike that the idea germinated in the mind of Eduard Bonmatí Lladó, road engineer and Josep Lluís Martínez Masferrer, geographer and historian. Both are passionate about walking explains Catalan 3Cat television and it was after having traveled the whole practicable part of the coast between Malgrat and Arelès that they established the diagnosis on the state of the round trails.
Sections in poor condition
On the 250 kilometers that run along the steep coast between Malgrat de Mar and Argelers, 155 kilometers of walking trails are considered in very good condition. Over 62 kilometers, the path is in poor condition. Certain municipalities, aware of the issue or even sometimes risks, are already repairing it.
-As for the remaining 33 kilometers, we can say that the path is downright nonexistent. On the map below we can see in green the points where there are round trails. If the section is not painted, it means either that the path is in poor condition, or that it does not exist.
In its statements to Catalonia Radio, the association “Camí de Mar” “The problem is that the road is blocked in 85 points on the Costa Brava and 1 on the Vermeille coast”. Discontinuities that prevent browsing the 250 kilometers of ribs without having to leave the sea. Because this is all the tourist attraction of this route.
The project of the Catalan association “Camí de Mar” seeks to capture hiking tourism. Inspired by the paths of Saint-Jacques, the 250km course was divided into 21 stages, which were thought of to be covered in the morning between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. And to take advantage of the afternoon, a cultural itinerary “inside” was also reflected.
In order for this trail project to be materialized, it requires the support of the municipalities and administrations of the two territories concerned. The most critical point being to create or recreate the missing 33km. The association is well aware that this will not happen overnight but sets the target of 2040 to materialize its project.
