What will become of the Abbé Pierre center? Following the publication of a third report concerning Abbé Pierre, Manuel Grente, mayor of Esteville, in Seine-Maritimeanswers the question that many are asking, in a press release published Wednesday January 22, 2025.

« These revelations are overwhelming, terrifying, and force me to speak out again as mayor of the village where the former Abbé Pierre Center is located and where he is buried. », Declares the mayor in his press release.

Permanent closure of the Abbé Pierre center

“My first thoughts are obviously with this man’s victims,” he said. My role […] is not to seek responsibility in this matter. My role is to ensure that Esteville remains a peaceful village where life is good. »

For this reason, the mayor announces that a contract for the free provision of the entire site of the former Abbé Pierre Center for the benefit of the municipalitywill be signed soon.

Concerning the manor, the municipality is still wondering about its future function, but does not lack ideas: a multidisciplinary medical home, a rest home, a place of social action, a home for childminders “or a mixture of all of these”.

Change of the fresco

In 2021, the artist Ernesto Novo created a fresco in the center's gardens with the image of the founder of Emmaüs.

Following the various reports concerning Abbé Pierre, this fresco will be covered with a new work of street art, still created by Ernesto Novo, the financing of which is supported by the Center abbé Pierre Emmaüs association.

For the rest of the developments, particularly concerning the manor, Manuel Grente appeals to the communities: “We have the courage, the audacity and the desire, you have the means, the knowledge and the skills to transform this placewhich had no future a few months ago, in a place that meets the needs of our rural territories. »
