Sunnah Channel broadcasted live the rituals of the last Friday prayer of the month of Safar 1446 AH, from the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. The worshipers attended from early morning in humility and calm, and supplicated to God Almighty for the good of this world and the hereafter, because on Friday there is an hour of response, and how beautiful and great is supplication in the Prophet’s Mosque and at the Noble Rawdah, this pure place where supplications are answered.

Ruling on missing Friday prayer due to sleep

Among the permissible excuses that remove blame for missing Friday prayer is: being overcome by sleep, which one is unable to control, according to what the Shafi’is and Hanbalis have stated.

The scholar Ibn Hajar al-Haytami al-Shafi’i said in “Tuhfat al-Muhtaj” (2/276, published by the Great Commercial Library): [ومن أعذارِها أيضًا: نحو زلزلةٍ وغلبة نُعَاسٍ] .

Al-Allamah Al-Shabramalsi said in his “Marginal Notes on Nihayat Al-Muhtaj” (1/372, Dar Al-Fikr edition): “It is not disliked to sleep before the time for the prayer begins. Ramli. This includes the Isha prayer, so sleeping before its time begins is not disliked. It also includes the Friday prayer, so sleeping before it is not disliked, even if one fears missing the Friday prayer, because he is not addressed by it before the time begins.”

The Shafi’i scholar Al-Hadrami said in “Explanation of the Hadrami Introduction” (p. 332, Dar Al-Minhaj edition): [وفي الجمعة فلا رخصة في تركها تمنع الإثم، أو الكراهة إلا لعذر عامٍّ، نحو:.. (وغلبة النوم) والنعاس بأن يعجز عن دفعهما؛ لمشقة الانتظار حينئذٍ].

Imam Ibn Qudamah al-Hanbali said in “al-Mughni” (2/252, Cairo Library edition): [وتسقط الجمعة بكلِّ عذرٍ يُسقط الجماعة، وقد ذكرنا الأعذار في آخر صفة الصلاة].

The place referred to is his saying in (1/452): [ويعذر في تركهما.. من يخاف غلبة النعاس حتى يفوتاه فيصلِّي وحده وينصرف].

This is evidenced by the words of the Prophet, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, in the noble hadith: “Do you not have an example in me? Then he said: Indeed, there is no negligence in sleeping. Rather, negligence is in the case of one who does not pray the prayer until the time of the next prayer comes. So whoever does that, let him pray it when he wakes up for it, and if it is the next day, let him pray it at its time.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from the hadith of Abu Qatada, may God be pleased with him.

What the two sheikhs narrated – and the wording is from Al-Bukhari – from the hadith of the Mother of the Believers Aisha, may God be pleased with her, that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, said: “If one of you feels drowsy while he is praying, let him lie down until sleep leaves him, for if one of you prays while he is drowsy, he does not know, perhaps he seeks forgiveness and then curses himself.”

If sleep is an excuse for someone who is praying, then it is even more so an excuse for someone who wants to enter into it. See: “Fath al-Rahman bi Sharh Zabad Ibn Raslan” by Imam al-Ramli (p. 352, Dar al-Minhaj edition).

What is the duty of someone who missed Friday prayer due to an excuse?

If the person responsible for performing the Friday prayer misses it due to an excuse, such as sleeping or something similar – or without an excuse – he must make it up, according to consensus. The scholar Ibn Baziza said in Rawdat al-Mustabin (1/374, Dar Ibn Hazm edition): [وقد انعقد الإجماع على وجوب قضاء الصلوات الفوائت بنسيان أو نوم] Oh.

This is indicated by what Imam Muslim included in his Sahih on the authority of Anas bin Malik, may God be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, said: “Whoever forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, its expiation is to pray it when he remembers it.”

And what Abu Dawud included in his Sunan, that the Prophet, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, said: “The pen has been lifted from three: from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the child until he reaches puberty, and from the insane person until he comes to his senses.”

What Al-Tirmidhi included in his “Jami’” on the authority of Abu Qatada, may God be pleased with him, who said: They mentioned to the Prophet, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, that they had slept through the prayer, so he, may God bless him and his family and grant them peace, said to them: “There is no negligence in sleeping, rather negligence is in being awake, so if one of you forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, then let him pray it when he remembers it.”

Imam Muslim included in his Sahih something similar to this in the story of their sleeping during the Fajr prayer. His wording is: “As for me, there is no negligence in sleeping. Rather, the negligence is on the one who does not pray the prayer until the time of the next prayer comes. So whoever does that, let him pray it when he wakes up for it, and if it is the next day, let him pray it at its time.”

Al-Shawkani said in “Nail al-Awtar” (2/33, Dar al-Hadith edition): [والحديث يدل على أنَّ النائم ليس بمكلف حال نومه، وهو إجماع] .

The scholar Mulla Ali al-Qari said in “Marqat al-Mafatih” (2/532, Dar al-Fikr edition): [(ليس في النوم)؛ أي: في حالهِ (تفريطٌ)؛ أي: تقصير ينسب إلى النائم في تأخيره الصلاة (إنما التفريط)؛ أي: يوجد (في اليقظة)؛ أي: في وقتها بأن تسبب في النوم قبل أن يغلبه، أو في النسيان بأن يتعاطى ما يعلم ترتبه عليه غالبا؛ كلعب الشطرنج، وأنه يكون مقصرًا حينئذٍ، ويكون آثمًا، (فإذا نسي أحدكم صلاة أو نام عنها؛ فليصلِّها إذا ذكرها)؛ أي: بعد النسيان أو النوم].

How to perform Friday prayer for those who missed it

Making up for Friday prayers is for the person responsible to pray it as a noon prayer, four rak’ahs, by consensus. Imam Ibn al-Mundhir said in “Al-Awsat fi al-Sunan wa al-Ijma’ wa al-Ikhtilaf” (4/107, Dar Taybah edition): [أجمع كل من نحفظ عنه من أهل العلم على أنَّ من فاتته الجمعة أن يصلي أربعًا].

The scholar Ibn Al-Mulqin said in “Ajalat Al-Muhtaj ila Tawjih Al-Minhaj” (1/359, Dar Al-Kitab edition): [ولا تقضى إذا فاتت جُمعةً، بل ظهرًا إجماعًا] Ah. With a little modification.

Imam Ibn Qudamah said in “Al-Mughni” (2/254, Cairo Library edition): [فأمَّا إذا فاتته الجمعة فإنَّه يصير إلى الظهر؛ لأنَّ الجمعة لا يمكن قضاؤها؛ لأنَّها لا تصح إلا بشروطها، ولا يوجد ذلك في قضائها، فتعيَّن المصير إلى الظهر عند عدمها، وهذا حال البدل]
