In a boost for Barcelona’s Champions League ambitions, coach Hansi Flick has expressed his joy at welcoming midfielder Frenkie de Jong back into the fold. The Dutch international’s return follows an extended spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury that kept him out of action since April and prevented him from participating in this summer’s European Championship.

As Barcelona prepares to face the Swiss champions Young Boys on Tuesday, Flick confirmed De Jong’s inclusion in the squad, hinting that the 27-year-old could make a brief appearance as he regains fitness. “It’s fantastic news to have Frenkie back among us. His presence is invaluable, even if it’s just for a few minutes,” Flick commented during a press conference on Monday. “His attitude throughout the rehabilitation process has been exemplary; he has remained closely connected to the team and is eager to make a contribution. We have missed him greatly.”

While De Jong may not be fit for a full match, Flick believes that even a cameo of around 10 to 20 minutes will be advantageous for both the player and the team. “Frenkie won’t be ready for a full 45 minutes, but even a short stint will be beneficial for him and us,” he acknowledged.

However, the Blaugrana are not without their challenges, as they navigate injuries to pivotal players like Gavi and Ronald Araujo. Compounding matters, Eric Garcia is also unavailable due to suspension, resulting from a red card in the recent Champions League opener against Monaco, a match that saw Barcelona suffer a disappointing defeat.

Despite these hurdles, Flick is maintaining an optimistic outlook regarding Barcelona’s European aspirations. The giants from Catalonia, who last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2015, have experienced a downturn in form in the competition, having reached the quarterfinals just once in the last four seasons.

“Our goal is to win every match we play,” Flick asserted confidently. “The team and I are determined to make our mark, and I am very optimistic about our chances. We’re committed to working hard and showcasing entertaining football, and if we need to regain the respect of our opponents, we will continue to strive for that goal.”
