Mats Hummels received his well-deserved BVB farewell during the farewell game of Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek – and was close to tears.

Mats Hummels was allowed to play in the Signal-Iduna Park for the last time and thus say goodbye to the fans of Borussia Dortmund. “I feel joy, but I also feel a little sad today. I spent a lot of my footballing life in this stadium. It was a wonderful time,” said the former international player after his brief appearance on Saturday afternoon at the farewell match of the two BVB icons Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek.

Hummels was bid farewell in front of over 80,000 fans after he left BVB in the summer after 13 years. “It’s nice that we have such a beautiful setting. I’m glad that no tears have been shed so far. But it’s going to be tight,” admitted the 35-year-old. “I’ve been close to it in the last few days when I thought about it. It’s also a sad day, even though it’s so beautiful.”

Only a few days ago, the veteran had found a new club and signed with AS Roma for a year. He traveled from Rome on Saturday especially for his former teammates and rode to the stadium on an e-scooter. “I think it’s great that we have such a nice setting today – with Kloppo, with lots of players from the past, with 80,000 fans in a sold-out house,” he enthused.
