ASEAN Cup 2024: Vietnam draws in Philippines

Uninspired, the Vietnamese were content on the evening of December 18 in Manila with a draw (1-1) against the Philippines, during their third match of the Southeast Asian Championship – World Cup. ASEAN 2024.

South Korean coach Kim Sang-sik made eight changes to the Vietnamese team’s lineup from the previous match against Indonesia. Defenders Bùi Hoàng Viêt Anh and Nguyên Thanh Binh as well as striker Dinh Thanh Binh played their first match at the 2024 ASEAN Cup.

In the first episode, the Filipino players created a fierce fight with the Vietnamese team after the opening whistle. The Filipino team controlled the ball slightly better but could not create dangerous attacks on Nguyên Filip’s goal. The Vietnamese team had more shots than their opponent in the first half. However, no goals were scored.

During the second half, coach Kim Sang Sik made five substitutions to change the game.

The surprise occurred at the 68e minute, when the Filipino Javier Gayoso made a decisive shot, opening the score of the match.

In the last seconds of the match, the Vietnamese players intensified their pressure. At the 97e minute, after a corner from Vietnam, midfielder Doan Ngoc Tân scored the precious goal for Vietnam to equalize at the end of the game.

With this result, the Vietnam national team moved to the top of Group B with seven points after three matches. Vietnam will face Myanmar on the evening of December 21 at the Viêt Tri stadium, Phu Tho province (North).

In the 2024 ASEAN Cup, Vietnam is in Group B alongside Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar. Group A includes Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Singapore.
