Wednesday December 4, Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthCarethe largest private health insurer in the United States, was shot and killed in the middle of the street in midtown Manhattan.

The alleged perpetrator of the fatal shootings Luigi Mangionea 26-year-old engineering graduate and computer enthusiast, was arrested Monday at a McDonald's in the rural town of Altoona, 300 miles west of New York.

The man was transferred last Thursday to New York where he appeared in federal court. This Monday, December 23, he pleaded “not guilty” to the charges of murder as a “terrorist” act.

It was at 9:26 a.m. (3:26 p.m. French time) that the 26-year-old man appeared, smiling, escorted by numerous police officers. The New York Post reports that the room was mostly women. It is also reported that the man received more than 140 love letters in his cell.

“How do you plead to this charge, sir? Guilty or not guilty,” Judge Gregory Carro asked him. “Not guilty,” replied the main suspect.

Luigi Mangione has been charged with murder, firearms charges, and harassment at the federal level. He was also indicted on 11 counts in state court last week. These counts include first-degree murder in aid of terrorism, second-degree murder and numerous counts of illegal possession of firearms.

If convicted, the man faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without any possibility of parole. He will appear next on February 21, 2025.
