This Sunday, December 22, 2024, a vehicle fire mobilized the Pyrénées-Orientales firefighters for nearly 4 hours in Perpignan, near the former Lidl located at the top of Avenue d'Espagne. The vehicle on fire was an unlicensed model from the Aixam company.
The incident worsened when the flames, which started from this parked car, spread to a neighboring business. The fire then engulfed a 1,200 m2 building which housed a waste oil tank.
The incident required a massive deployment of emergency services: 26 firefighters from Sdis 66 intervened to control the fire, limit chemical risks and prevent surrounding pollution.
The used oil spilled all over the parking lot. The firefighters then set up a security perimeter, used sand to absorb the spilled oil, and carried out a ventilation operation to evacuate the smoke from the premises.
“Let us remain vigilant in the face of fire risks and remember to secure our parking and storage areas.” specifies the Sdis of the Pyrénnées-Orientales.
The material toll is heavy but the structure of the building appears not to be damaged, and the company should not suffer technical unemployment. A specialized company will intervene shortly to clean up the residue.
