“Mr. Bruno Retailleau, Minister of the Interior, expresses his deep emotion following the death of Captain Florian Monnier, assigned to the national operations center of the general directorate of the national gendarmerie in Issy-les-Moulineaux (92) , sent as reinforcements to Mayotte since December 18 following the passage of Cyclone Chido”, we can read in a press release from the Ministry of the Interior.

While participating in an operational mission to “reestablish communication networks in the Mount Combani sector in Mamoudzou”, Florian Monnier “suddenly” lost consciousness. Despite “rapid” treatment by his comrades and evacuation “to the Mamoudzou hospital center”, he succumbed to his illness, state services specify.
Retailleau says he is “deeply touched”
Aged 50, “Captain Florian Monnier had joined the general management of the national gendarmerie a few months ago, returning from a previous assignment in New Caledonia. He had been sent to Mayotte to strengthen the relief and security system of the Mahorese population”, continues the press release.

The passage of Cyclone Chido, which devastated the Indian Ocean archipelago on Saturday, left 35 dead, according to a new provisional report drawn up this Friday. The authorities also deplore 67 serious injuries who were treated, as well as 2,432 minor injuries.
