Newly elected Donald Trump will soon be in the White House. In the context of the war in Ukraine, Europeans fear that the United States will negotiate directly with Moscow. The risk for them: that the Ukrainians' conditions in the negotiations are not respected. Guillaume Ancel, former officer and war chronicler, looks back on the current situation.

While the negotiations are at the heart of the news of the war between Ukraine and Russia, Guillaume Ancel, former officer and war chronicler, explains that the talks have already largely begun: “We are in a phase of acceleration and pressure from the different protagonists to reach an agreement.

It remains to be seen what role the United States will play in the negotiations as Donald Trump soon arrives at the White House: “We know that Trump wants to impose peace before January 20. The negotiations are therefore already quite advanced. It remains to be seen who will be the European force responsible for monitoring the demarcation line which separated the two protagonists. What is negotiable and what is not”, continues the former war chronicler.

“We can clearly see that Volodymyr Zelensky is preparing Ukrainian society by playing on the fact that Ukrainians are exhausted by these three years of war, that Ukrainians never wanted to mobilize their youth to go to the front, and that he is lacking soldiers today. There is a kind of balancing act,” adds Guillaume Ancel.
